PROFESSIONAL HUNTERS ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH AFRICA PHASA

PHASA is the official mouthpiece of our professional hunting fraternity and offers a variety of services to it's members and foreign visitors. For more info visit the PHASA website at www.phasa.co.za or on Facebook.

Main objectives include: high quality service and ethical standards amongst it's members, to promote professional hunting and to liaise with both surrounding and international hunting organisations.

LEGISLATION IN SOUTH AFRICA:

In 1981, legislation was introduced to control professional hunting outfits and the hunting industry in South Africa. The object was to provide protection to the foreign / international hunters visiting South Africa with certain legal requirements and standards to be met prior to a licence been issued to a professional hunter or outfitter. To ensure piece of mind please be sure to book with a PHASA member only !

SPECIES:

With over 40 different species of game available, South Africa has more to offer than any other African country, including the Big Five and 7 endemic animals only found here in South Africa, including the mountain ranging Grey Rhebuck, Mountain Reedbuck, Blesbuck and Black Wildebeest - all found in our Mpumalanga concessions.

TROPHY QUALITY:

Due to well controlled hunting areas both private and state owned, trophy hunting throughout South Africa is very successful. Over 90% of trophies taken by hunters with us in the past 25 seasons have been record book quality including many Top Ten entries.

HUNTING SEASONS:

Hunting is available throughout the year due to special exemption permits allocated to privately owned game ranches. The months, March - November are generally preferred due to the more suitable climatic conditions and cooler temperatures.

Bird-hunting is more seasonal and runs from May through August.

DURATION OF SAFARI:

Hunting days are determined by the number of animals required and difficulty of species involved.

The average duration varies between 5 - 14 days, although no minimum days are required for most species

HUNTING LICENSES / PERMITS:

Other than most other African countries, trophy fees printed, include licences, except on certain members of the Big Five. Special Cites / Import Permits are required for some species to leave the country and assistance is provided to obtain these documents.

ARMS AND AMMUNITION:

South Africa requires a temporary import/export permit for firearms and ammunition when traveling to South Africa. We strongly recommend you apply for an advance rifle permit through our PHASA office or other clearing agents to assist with this process. For further detailed information with regard to traveling with Rifles, please visit the PHASA website at www.phasa.co.za

Certain restrictions apply on firearms of the same caliber and ammunition restrictions are reasonable. For medium to larger plains game species ,we recommend between a 7 mm to .375 caliber with quality variable scopes, with the latter being the minimum for dangerous game. If you are hunting large thick skinned game you may want to consider a caliber larger than .375.

Familiar” well used rifles, quality soft / solid bullets and good bullet placement are the most important factors for African hunting.(discuss with your outfitter prior to buying ammunition for best suggestions and recommendations)Firearms can be hired by prior arrangement for those hunters wishing to travel without firearms. Several calibers including 7&57,7&64,30-06,375 are available from MGS with quality scopes and ammunition available.
